SugarHouse Dominating All Forms Of PA Online Gambling

The latest revenue numbers from the PA Gaming Control Board (PGCB) show that SugarHouse is both the most successful online sportsbook and online casino.

July was Earth’s hottest month on record.

For Pennsylvania’s online casinos and sportsbooks, things are just heating up. Just-released July data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) shows record-breaking numbers and player’s fervor for new online offerings.

Bettors opt for online over retail

Bettors might not agree on many things, but one thing is already clear: The majority prefer to wager online. Pennsylvania online betting accounted for $38.9 million in bets, which translated to 65.7% of all bets in the state.

The numbers display online’s scorching start in Pennsylvania. In June, online staked its claim to 41.7% of the handle.

July a record month for PA betting handle

Mother Earth and her heat waves weren’t the only one breaking records in July. A total handle of $59.3 million broke the Pennsylvania record for the most amount wagered in a month.

Even though July is a traditionally slow sports month, it shouldn’t be a shock with the boost of the second full month of PA online betting. It’s a safe bet to assume that each month, especially during football season, will continue to rewrite the Pennsylvania sports betting record books.

SugarHouse leads the way in PA

SugarHouse was the first to the betting app party and seemed to like the view from the top spot with $22.1 million online handle. It obliterated the competition, taking about 45% of all bets during the month of July.

SugarHouse’s sister-brand BetRivers finished a distant second with $9.9 million online handle. FanDuel, with only two weeks in the PA market, turned heads with $3.1 million online handle

Promo codes skew the numbers

SugarHouse didn’t just use the novelty of being of the first to the online sportsbook market as their only marketing tool. Perhaps the most powerful was being the first to solve that pesky iPhone accessibility issue and tap into huge market of mobile users. Also, the generous sign-up bonus set the bar for those to follow.

Sports betting revenue numbers may appear “meh.” However, it’s important to remember the huge amount of promotional credit sites are forking out to claim market share. Sister brands Rivers and SugarHouse went the heaviest with about a million dollars in promotional credit. So far, it dwarfs the amount FanDuel ($120,000) and Parx ($90,000) gave away last month.

Taking into account promotional credits, online revenue for July came in at $665,799.

Online casinos first month in PA

PGCB released its first set of online casino numbers as well, reporting $49.2 million was wagered across  Parx, Hollywood Casino, and SugarHouse. The number is deceiving since the sites didn’t go live until mid-July. Check back in August for a better view of a full month. Until then,  here is the first month of interactive gaming total gross revenue:

Online slots revenue: $517,712
Online table games revenue: $294,594

Online slots are taxed at a rate of 54%, yielding the state $279,564. The 16% tax rate for interactive table games fetched the state another $41,243.

SugarHouse clout spreads to online casino

Sugar is just as sweet at the online slots and table games. SugarHouse’s $261,869 online slot revenue and $160,927 in online table game revenue accounted for half of the state’s total.

Here’s how the other online casinos fared during their abbreviated availability in July.

Parx:

Slots: $139,903
Table games: $120,221

Hollywood:

Slots: $115,940
Table games: $13,446

Expect the numbers to continue to grow

It’s about to get a lot hotter and crowded in the online casino and sportsbook space in Pennsylvania.

  • Preseason football and NFL futures bets are live.
  • College football begins on Aug. 23.
  • The regular season kicks off on Sept. 5.
  • All four apps are finally iPhone accessible.
  • There are a few others who are launching soon as hinted by the PGCB.

Hollywood Premieres Online Casino App For iPhones And iPads

Hollywood Casino now has bragging rights as the only PA online casino you can download from the Apple app store onto your iPhone.

In Hollywood, it’s all about making an entrance.

Hollywood Casino PA launched Pennsylvania’s first online casino app for iPhone on Monday.

It arrived in style but lacked much substance.

Hollywood Casino offers IGT Game King video poker suite and four slot games:

  • Cleopatra
  • Wheel of Fortune: Hawaiian Getaway
  • DaVinci Diamonds
  • Cats

Hollywood Casino PA is touting itself as “the only app with games from the casino floor.”

An Apple delay keeps the online casinos away

We’ve done a healthy amount of reporting on the change in the Apple app guidelines and its fallout for online casinos and sportsbooks.

Every online sportsbook in Pennsylvania eventually figured a way to work on iPhones after initial delays. However, casino apps faced a bit harder path. Before Hollywood hit the App Store, the only PA online casino access on iOS was via PlaySugarHouse PA browser access in tandem with the GeoGuard app.

A small selection of games

The app is a definite download for video poker fans. Game King’s suite has nine video poker titles.

Hollywood Casino’s Apple app pales in comparison to its other online offerings. The browser version of Hollywood Casino contains 72 titles, including five versions of roulette, baccarat, and the progressive slot Divine Fortune. Android users have access to 71 of those titles.

How to get the Hollywood Casino app for iPhone

Here’s how Apple users can get started with the Hollywood Casino app. Open the App Store on your iPhone or iPad (insert praise emojis, cue 90s club banger CeCe Peniston’s “Finally”).

In the search bar type “Hollywood Casino PA.” If you just put in “Hollywood” or “Hollywood Casino,” you’ll have to sift through too many options.

Press “get” on Hollywood Casino PA, then “install” followed by  “open.”

The intro screen lays out the three steps to get started:

  • Register
  • Deposit
  • Play

To advance, press “let’s go.”

Information needed to register:

  • Username
  • Email
  • Password (Must contain eight characters including one uppercase letter and one number)
  • Security question
  • Name
  • Date of birth
  • Cell number
  • Address
  • Last four digits of Social Security number

Enable location

When using the Hollywood Casino app, or playing on any online casino in the state, you must be physically located in Pennsylvania. The app requires you to enable location service. If you do not, you won’t be able to play.

Here’s how to turn on your location services:

On iOS: Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services. Make sure that the switched is toggled on. Make sure WiFi is enabled, even if you aren’t connected to a network as this helps with location accuracy.

Promotions for Hollywood Casino

Hollywood Casino is offering a $25 bonus to newly registered players. Funds automatically load to your account.

Don’t forget this fine print to note on the promo:

  • The offer is only valid on the desktop version of the casino or the app.
  • The promotion runs from July 15 to Dec. 31.
  • Bonus credits are non-cashable and cannot be withdrawn.
  • Bonus credits must be wagered at least one time. Winnings generated from wagering of bonus credits will be transferred to the registered player’s cash balance at which time they may be withdrawn.

Philadelphia’s Upcoming Live! Casino Will Go Live With Sports Betting

The Live! Hotel & Casino project is the 11th PA casino licensee to seek a sports betting license, even though the property isn’t opening until Dec. 2020.

Live! Hotel & Casino is getting in the game of Pennsylvania sports betting.

On July 27, plans were submitted to Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) for the property’s online, retail, and satellite betting.

What we know about Live! sportsbook

In terms of location, Live!’s brick-and-mortar sportsbook is in a prime spot. It’s located in the heart of Philadelphia’s major sports complex. During a July 10 PGCB meeting, Cordish Gaming, the project’s parent company, said they would apply for the $10 million sports wagering certificate by month’s end. The company also unveiled artist renderings of the casino and the sportsbook.

As for a Live!-branded PA online sportsbook, other than mentioning it is in the works, the application offered no details regarding projected online launch dates. The company currently does not have an online partner.

Competition heats up for casinos and sportsbooks in Philadelphia

The competition in Philadelphia isn’t limited to the confines of Lincoln Financial Field or Wells Fargo Center. At the July 10 PGCB meeting, reps said Live! Hotel & Casino is on track for a December 2020 opening.

Cordish possess a growing national presence when Live! bills itself as a “world-class integrated casino and hospitality destination,” it’s expected to deliver.

Currently, there is nothing to suggest otherwise. Live! is the largest initial development of a casino in the state of Pennsylvania. Cordish’s presentation laid out a hotel and casino with a much swankier feel than the current offerings in the area. Plans include porte-cochere video art, oversize luxury hotel rooms, and upscale dining options.

Live!’s projected scale and type of experience presents a polar opposite to neighboring Parx-operated South Philadelphia Turf Club. It will no doubt serve as competition to SugarHouse Sportbook (soon to be Rivers Philadelphia Sportsbook). Live! will enjoy the walking-distance advantage to the sports complex.

Live! satellite casino sportsbook

Construction is well underway at Live!, with erecting of pre-cast and steel finishing soon.

Plans for a Live!-sponsored mini-casino, which will anchor Westmoreland Mall are also in the works. Cordish wants to offer sports betting at the satellite casino. However, since the gaming expansion law passed in October 2017, there’s been some confusion about how mini-casinos and sports betting interact.

Live! is a Category 2 casino. Category 1 casinos can offer a retail sportsbook at satellite facilities. However, Category 2 and 3 properties currently need to file a supplemental $10 million license for the mini-casino property.

Live! is crying foul in the application. It is petitioning the board to allow Category 2 properties the same permissions as Category 1 facilities.

Sports betting licensing fees in Pennsylvania

Live! is the 11th Pennsylvania casino to apply for the $10 million sports betting license. It represents a whopping $110 million in sports betting license fees for Pennsylvania. By comparison, the tax revenue over the course of seven months of legalized sports betting stands at $7.8 million.

With 11 of Pennsylvania’s 13 casinos applying for a sports betting license, the hefty price tag is not proving to be a deterrent. Or it could simply be a case of “casino peer pressure.” Everyone else is doing it, so should we … if we don’t customers will leave us?

Joining the club of Pennsylvania sports betting license holders requires much more than designer clothes and a fast car. Even a high-roller’s eyes would bulge at the buy-in in comparison to neighboring New Jersey.

Pennsylvania:

  • Licensing fee: $10 million
  • Tax on gross revenue: 34%
  • Local share tax: 2%
  • Federal excise tax on handle: 0.25%

New Jersey:

  • Licensing fee: $100,000
  • Tax on gross revenue for brick-and-mortar: 8.5%
  • Tax on gross revenue for online: 13%
  • Local share tax. 1.25%

DraftKings Sportsbook PA is officially in the works thanks to a deal with Penn National and its The Meadows Casino in Pennsylvania.

In the world of sports betting, Pennsylvania is now fit for a king.

DraftKings partnering with Penn in PA

In a July 31 press release, Penn National Gaming, the largest regional gaming operator in North America, announced it entered into multi-year agreements with top sports betting operators for online sports betting and iGaming market access across the company’s portfolio.

DraftKings is the only one of the group gaining access to Pennsylvania.

The partnership of powerhouses includes:

  • DraftKings
  • PointsBet
  • theScore
  • The Stars Group

“Sports betting represents an exciting new growth opportunity for Penn National,” said Penn National’s Sr. Vice President of Interactive Gaming Jon Kaplowitz. “We’re pleased to be providing the top names in sports betting, iGaming and poker access to our Company’s non-primary licenses to conduct these operations in exchange for a combination of upfront cash and equity, one-time market access fees, and ongoing revenue sharing.”

DraftKings home at The Meadows

The Meadows Casino in Washington County will serve as DraftKings’ PA sports betting home. There is no projected date for the opening of a brick-and-mortar sportsbook or for the launch of an online sportsbook.

Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) spokesperson Doug Harbach confirmed late Wednesday that The Meadows applied for a $10 million sports betting license earlier this month. He also verified  PGCB must approve DraftKings as an operator for sports wagering.

The expansion builds upon Penn National Gaming and DraftKings earlier West Virginia market access deal, which was announced in Dec. 2018. DraftKings’ additional market access is exclusive to Penn National Gaming across certain states in which Penn National Gaming operates casino properties. Since launching in New Jersey, DraftKings has accepted more than 21 million bets and paid out over $650 million in winnings to customers.

DraftKings Chief Business Officer Ezra Kucharz commented on the continued partnership:

“With dozens of states having already legalized sports betting or poised to do so in the near future, this expanded partnership ensures DraftKings is positioned to quickly enter new markets. Penn National Gaming brings tremendous resources, people and experience to the partnership and, as we finalized the terms of the deal, it was abundantly clear there is a real synergy between our two companies that bodes very well for the future.”

Is Penn National still partnering with William Hill?

Penn National has been serious about sports betting in Pennsylvania since the beginning. It was first to apply for a sports betting license and first to receive approval. It launched the first sportsbook in Pennsylvania at Hollywood Casino in Nov. 2018 with partner William Hill.

The latest news from Penn National does not mention William Hill. This does not necessarily mean Hollywood is ditching William Hill for DraftKings.

But even though this (Draft)King found a throne in Pennsylvania, it’s not immune to “royal” gossip.

More on the Penn/DraftKings deal

Pennsylvania is not the only state in the deal with the two companies. Under the terms of Penn’s various agreements, each “skin” partner will have the option to own, operate, and brand real-money online sports betting, poker, and casino offerings in each of the states outlined below. These deals are pursuant to a first, second or third skin, as applicable, and subject to license availability, state law, and regulatory approvals.

DraftKings terms of agreement with Penn National Gaming

States Covered:

  • Florida (1stskin)
  • Indiana (3rd skin)
  • Missouri (1st skin)
  • Ohio (1st skin)
  • Pennsylvania (1st skin)
  • Texas (1stskin)
  • West Virginia (2nd skin)

The agreement is for 10 years subject to a 10-year extension. The deal also includes a revenue share to PNG based on net gaming revenue.

Kambi scores big win

In concert with the bombshell announcement,  Kambi announced it will be the long-term exclusive sports betting supplier to Penn National. Kambi provides sports betting services to licensed gaming operators.

Kambi currently supplies the odds to three of the four online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania:

“By controlling our front-end product and relying upon our new partnership with Kambi for managed-trading services, we can create a lasting and differentiated online and retail product experience for our customers,” commented Kaplowitz.

The agreement is not expected to have a material impact on Kambi’s 2019 revenues. However, it has the potential to have a significant effect on its revenues in future years.

Kambi’s Chief Executive Officer Kristian Nylén commented:

“Kambi’s strategy has always been to partner with tier one operators, particularly those that share our vision and passion for sports and sports wagering. In Penn National, we have found an ideal partner – one that is not only passionate about providing high quality sports wagering experiences to its customers, but a company that adheres to the highest level of ethical business standards.”

Given The Shared Wallet With NJ And iOS App, FanDuel PA Sportsbook Launch Worth The Wait

While FanDuel made customers wait before they could see the new PA sports betting app, the end result is an unprecedented online betting option.

**This is a developing story and we will update with new information as it comes in

FanDuel Sportsbook at Valley Forge Casino joined the Pennsylvania online sports betting game on Monday. It came almost four hours after their projected launch time which was delayed due to technical difficulties.

No need to download a different app to use the FanDuel online sportsbook in Pennsylvania either. Android and iOS users are prompted to download an upgrade to existing FanDuel apps. From there, the app handles the geolocating.

Users can simply login with their existing credentials to access the site. According to FanDuel support and reports from a few users, you have access to New Jersey funds. Meaning, if you have already deposited on the site in New Jersey, you can bet with that money rather than deposit all over again.

The revenue king of New Jersey crosses the river

Will FanDuel’s success flow across the river?

FanDuel tops New Jersey online sports revenue betting numbers with a year-to-date total of $29,446,758. They account for about half of all of the state’s online sports betting revenue.

As the only online sportsbook in Pennsylvania in operation for a full month, SugarHouse garnered $932,112 in revenue in June.

Online Sports Betting Already Responsible For 40% Of PA Action

June sports betting numbers for Pennsylvania broke the record on several fronts and signals online betting will be big in the Keystone State.

Hot town, summer at the sportsbook.

The temperatures aren’t the only thing that’s sizzling in Pennsylvania.

The Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) reported a record-breaking month for sports betting. The fervor for online betting is real, as more than 40% of the money wagered in the state in June came via sportsbook apps and websites.

The numbers are coming in hot. Especially considering only one online operator was open for the full month.

Sports betting generated $46.3 million in bets in June, shattering the previous best month by more than $10 million. The bets were placed during one of the traditionally slowest sports months of the year, which probably means that the record won’t stand for too long.

Revenue numbers were a bit cooler at $2 million. But don’t take the number too seriously. It only included three days of online betting for Rivers Casino and Parx. It knocks the hold out of whack as unsettled and futures bets meant minimal monthly returns for the two new ventures.

“The amount of wagering we have seen being done is significant. Similar to [what] New Jersey has found right now, online sports wagering is going to be where a larger amount of the handle occurs,” said PGCB Director of Communications Doug Harbach

Inside the numbers

PlaySugarhouse.com was the only operator that was open all month. Rivers and Parx for just a couple of days All three were only available on desktop or Android due to the Apple problem.

On July 17, a solution appeared to arrive in the form of GeoGuard Location Validator, an app produced by GeoComply. SugarHouse launched its online casino and iOS users who download the third-part app GeoGuard, are able to play at the online casino, PlaySugarHouse.com, and BetRivers (its sister brand.)

With SugarHouse already leading the pack in terms of revenue, the addition of iOS users should only pad their lead.

Bear in mind that June is an especially quiet month for sports betting. The NBA Finals ended on June 13th. Other events that piqued bettors interest in June were the US Open and MLB action.

How To Install GeoGuard And Start Playing And Betting On Your iPhone In PA

We walk you through exactly how to download the GeoComply GeoGuard app, set it up on your iPhone, and start playing on PA online casinos and sportsbooks like SugarHouse.

Yesterday, the big news was supposed to be the launch of SugarHouse’s online casino on July 17, but SugarHouse’s offerings were underwhelming. It only included 22 titles (though has since added nearly two dozen more). But the real story was the launch of its Apple integration.

In June, Apple updated its App Store Review Guidelines. It required operators to develop a native iOS-based product. Affected apps would be removed from the Apple App Store if they did not come into compliance and new apps could not be added to the store.

Today, it appears the solution for Apple users arrived. The GeoGuard Location Validator, an app produced by GeoComply.

How do you like them apples?

Once verified by the super-quick process, iOS users have access to the browser-based version of the online casino or sportsbook. Users must be physically located in Pennsylvania to play, which is exactly what GeoGuard verifies.

How GeoGuard and SugarHouse work together

SugarHouse finished third in the race to online gaming in Pennsylvania behind Hollywood Casino and Parx. But they were the first to offer iOS users access to their online casino and sportsbook. Sister property BetRivers started offering the technology just hours later. Hopefully, other Pennsylvania online casinos and sportsbooks will follow their lead.

SugarHouse is tapping into a huge market. Apple ranks as the second-most popular mobile operating system with a 47% market share.

There is no iOS app for online casinos or sports betting in Pennsylvania yet. But the third-party app, GeoGuard Location Validator, is a solid solution because all the sportsbooks in New Jersey use the GeoComply technology. This should alleviate any “third-party” download jitters.

How to install Get GeoGuard Location Validator

First, sign off of FaceApp. Do you really want to see what you look like when you are old? Also, its privacy policy is a “convoluted mess.”

Back to the GeoGuard Location Validator. First, go into the App Store. Then type “GeoGuard Location Validator” or “GeoComply” in the search bar.

Click on the “Get” button followed by the “Open” button.

You will see this welcome screen that says,  “Just 2 fast steps and you’re ready to go.”  I was skeptical. Usually, I need to come up with a username, password with symbols and three security questions. Not the case here.

Finally, click “Let’s start!”

If you agree and allow, you can be set up in less than 15 seconds.

Two quick steps to get verified

Step 1

The app asks that you to enable location services on your device to use the GeoGuard Location Validator supported websites. Then it says to click “Always Allow” on the pop-up message.

Click on the “OK, I understand” white-shaded box, which prompts this pop-up.

Click “Always Allow”

Step 2

In order to securely verify your location, the GeoGuard Location Validator needs to send you notifications. You must click “Allow” on the pop-up message to proceed.

Click on the “OK, I understand” white-shaded box which prompts this pop-up.

Click “Allow”

That’s it.

That really is it.

Return to your browser to continue.

How to adjust settings for GeoGuard

You must click “Always Allow.” If you click “Only When Using This App,” it’s not going to work.

If you click “Only when using this app” (which I always do), you need to go settings. There you can change location from “while using” to “always.”

When asked GeoGuard would like to send you notifications, you must say yes. If not, you have to go into settings and move the toggle on “allow notifications.”

What if I don’t download GeoComply and try to play on iOS?

Once logged into PA.PlaySugarHouse.com, there will be a prompt for the GeoGuard.

After it is downloaded, you’ll return to the SugarHouse website. If you’re located inside Pennsylvania’s borders, you’re all set. If you’re not, you’ll get a “geolocation failed” message.” And it’s a bit scary.

Who is GeoComply?

GeoComply provides geolocation compliance technology.  The Vancouver-based company started in 2011, and now serves nearly all of the iGaming market.  GeoComply’s client list includes Rush Street Interactive, which owns SugarHouse and Rivers Casino.

Some other GeoComply clients include:

“Necessity is the mother of invention, and this new launch is a very good example of that,” said GeoComply CEO David Briggs when asked about the new product.

“Since Apple hardened their policy on refusing any iGaming Apps with wrapped HTML 5 code in, our team has been working extremely hard over the last few months, along with Rush Street Interactive, in order to find a way to service iOS users while meeting the high regulatory standards demanded in States such as Pennsylvania. Although there is more to come from us in terms of further features and innovations in order to make the product easier to use from a UX perspective, we are glad to get something out there for patrons on iOS devices.”

What does online gaming mean for casinos?

Online gambling for Pennsylvania is finally here. A 2017 Pennsylvania law allowed a massive gambling expansion. For a license fee of $10 million, the state’s casino could operate online gambling websites and apps.

PGCB Director of Communication Doug Harbach gave his thoughts on the new age of online gaming for casinos in the Commonwealth.

“Brick-and-mortar casinos are the owners for the online license for sports wagering and casino games. It gives them the opportunity not to lose revenue, but to gain overall revenue. I think it will be a positive.”

Spotlight On PA’s First Online Gambling Site: HollywoodCasino.com

Pennsylvania finally has its first gambling site that offers regulated online slots and table games thanks to the launch of HollywoodCasino.com.

Hollywood sets the trends. From leading ladies and their flawless style to live action reboots, the stars light the screen and the path for what’s next.

Hollywood Casino lives up to its moniker. They have a penchant for setting the trend, plus a fearless fortitude to be first.

In November 2018, they opened Pennsylvania’s first retail sportsbook. Today, they took another giant leap into the next frontier of gaming for Pennsylvania. At 11 a.m., Hollywood Casino launched Pennsylvania’s first online casino.

Penn National Gaming, Hollywood’s parent company, partnered with IGT to roll out the site. HollywoodCasino.com will conduct a soft launch in the next three days.

That appears to be a good thing as the initial launch had some users experienced trouble with registration and connecting with online support.

What happens during an online casino soft launch

Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) Director of Communication Doug Harbach offered some insight on what they look for during the soft launch.

“First, we look that the systems are operating as they were tested earlier during lab work. Then, we look at the functions that ensure money is properly collected and paid out correctly. We monitor if the systems are not in any way going offline. We are always looking at the system itself, visibly that is has the proper markings on the screen for gambling and logo of operator.”

Live! Casino Project Won’t Let Traffic Debate Jam Up Their Launch Schedule

The Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia project is five years in the making, but it is finally in the home stretch of getting built and opening its doors.

Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia is coming to life. However, they still do not have final approval from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB). The long-in-the-making casino has faced a number of hurdles including:

  • An appeal by SugarHouse Casino and three other applicants regarding their licensure.
  • Opposition from African-American community groups due to allegations of racial discrimination at other Cordish-owned properties.
  • A three-year court slog over a state law prohibiting any casino owner from owning more than a one-third interest in another casino within the state.

Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia lived to fight another day by committing to a community benefits agreement promising work to minorities. The court battle ended in October 2017, when the state repealed the casino ownership laws as a part of its new gambling expansion laws.

PGCB held hearing to renew Stadium Casino project license

At the PGCB meeting on July 10, Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia faced another hurdle – the renewal of their Category 2 License.

Despite not opening their doors, or even having doors, the PGCB is required to conduct a license renewal every five years. And, yes, it has been five long winding years since Live! initially received licensure.

The biggest issue surrounding the renewal of the license is possible traffic problems. PGCB and Live! Hotel and Casino Philadelphia reps discussed additional congestion to the area, sporting event and peak casino times, and the possible addition of a freeway ramp.

After a lengthy discussion, PGCB decided to table the renewal of Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia’s license.

“Obviously, there was a lot of new information brought to our attention today. Specifically relating to traffic and the (possible) existence or non-existence of a ramp. Hopefully between now and our next meeting we can fully evaluate the information we’ve been given and come back at our August meeting and be able to rule on the entire matter at that time,” commented PGCB Chairman David M. Barasch.

Live! Hotel and Casino Philadelphia and Philadelphia road woes

Live! Hotel and Casino Philadelphia responded to all the recommendations by PGCB traffic engineering consultant, Orth-Rogers & Associates to Traffic Impact Studies prior to license award. Orth-Rogers concluded that the local road and transit infrastructure are sufficient to handle the proposed uses.

Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia received recognition by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation at a Board suitability hearing that a new I-76 West on-ramp was not on the state Transportation Improvement Program. Moreover, it had not been subject to even a preliminary study.

When the PGCB issued the license in 2017, it defined the ramp condition as studying the ramp.

“In order to comply with the requirement, Stadium Casino, LLC shall, within 10 business days of the execution of these conditions, contact all appropriate authorities…to discuss this requirement and begin the process of implementing same if determined to be feasible by said transportation authorities.”

Reps from Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia explained that city and permits are satisfied. Planned traffic mitigation upgrades includes:

  • Replacement and upgrade of traffic signals at three intersections on Packer Avenue;
  • Installation of new cabling from Broad Street to 7th Street signal to enable communication with Philadelphia Police/Streets Department/PADOT area Traffic Command Center;
  • Agreement that Streets Department/Police Department Stadium Large Event Traffic Plan covers traffic ingress and egress to the casino and hotel property.

However, the City of Philadelphia does not believe the 7th Street site is viable.

“The City also recognizes that the location under discussion by the Gaming Control Board at 7th Street has challenges of its own. The dimensions of the property would require of design waivers from federal standards. That location would also place merging traffic in very proximity to the off-ramp at Broad Street, creating then potential for a dangerous weave condition between merging and exiting traffic on 76.”

A look at Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia

Representatives for Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia displayed renderings of the casino which is being touted as “the first comprehensive gaming, resort, entertainment and sports destination in the United States.”

The $700 million 1.5 million sq. ft. complex is slated to offer:

  • 2200 slot machines
  • 125 live action table games
  • 30 poker tables
  • 4 restaurants
  • A sportsbook

Located in the heart of Philadelphia’s major sports complex, it should come as no surprise that Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia will have sports betting. Reps from Live! said are still considering operators for the sportsbook.

Live! Hotel & Casino Philadelphia claims to be the largest initial development of any casino in Pennsylvania. The project investment has increased from $450 million to $700 million. Also, to date, $254 million in equity has been invested in license fees, land acquisition, A&E, and construction.
