Player’s Choice: Online Slots Or Table Games? The Answer Might Surprise You

Pennsylvania online casinos have shown an interesting trend that defies industry expectations as players flock to online table games over slots.

In the confines of brick-and-mortar casinos, slots are more popular than table games. It’s long been the preference of players to sidle up to the slot machine instead of taking their turn at the table.

In terms of revenue in 2019, slot machines in Pennsylvania raked in $2.4 billion compared to table games’ $900 million.

However, with the arrival of PA online casinos, recent numbers hint at a shift.

More wagers recently at online table games

Table games have yet to surpass slots in terms of revenue. But in November and December, table games saw more action than online slots.

Total wagers for online casinos in November:

  • Online table games: $176,459,102
  • Online slots: $140,300,742

Total wagers at online casinos in December:

  • Online table games: $209,993,140
  • Online slots: $175,330,191

Perhaps it was just a matter of timing that the statewide numbers skewed this way. Initial offerings at casinos consisted of mostly slots. As rosters added table games, data from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board (PGCB) shows that the players’ attention shifted to the tables.

Big things happened to the gaming industry in 2019

Five online casinos arrived in Pennsylvania in 2019.

  • Hollywood Casino
  • SugarHouse
  • Parx
  • Mount Airy (PokerStars)
  • Mohegan Sun (Unibet)

At Hollywood Casino, slots have outperformed table games each month. So far, it’s the only casino in PA where that is the case.

Table games topped slots three of the last six months at Parx. Parx was the only operator with online blackjack and gained an early advantage until the other casinos added the game in late August.

Fueled by progressive slot favorite Divine Fortune, slots ruled at SugarHouse. But in November, table games surpassed slots for the first time, and it did so by nearly $20 million. SugarHouse leads PA online casinos in revenue for both slots and table games.

Mount Airy (PokerStars) had the biggest gulf. In November, table games saw $37 million in action while slot play hit only $10.8 million.  The numbers continued to grow the following month as table games ($54 million) widened the gap from slots ($19 million).

It has the benefit of being the only operator in Pennsylvania offering internet poker. Also, PokerStars Casino features 13 table games, which is more than Parx (10) and SugarHouse (seven).

What’s next?

Table games receiving more wagers than slots is an anomaly. Players prefer slots because they are easier to learn and play. Most table games require a level of skill. Pennsylvania has proven different (so far) when it comes to online play.

The PGCB publishes a monthly breakdown of online slot and table games. Since New Jersey does not split their report but rather lists online casinos as a whole, it’s difficult to see what is more popular there. But the best guess is slots are more popular.

For operators, the popularity of table games in PA is no doubt welcome news. A major reason is table games are subject to a much lower tax rate (16%) than slots (54%).

Parx already is upping the ante to capitalize on the clear interest in online table games that exist in Pennsylvania. They will soon become the first in the state to host online live dealer games, including roulette, blackjack and poker. With these additions, table game revenue could outpace slots, even more, going forward.

Did Colin Cowherd Win? He Ended 2019 With A Dud Week But A 50-50 Year

Colin Cowherd’s NFL picks for FOX Bet started out red hot, but the back half of the season was lackuster, including a 0-5 Week 17.

It was a very Colin Cowherd Christmas. With his spirits soaring from a 4-1 Week 16, Cowherd headed into the holiday happy.

His timeline was filled with Christmas cheer from train sets, puppies, courtside seats to the Utah Jazz, and a family snowmobiling excursion.

So excuse Cowherd if he didn’t have time to record his Blazin’ 5 segment and only post his picks. But you might have a hard time defending his winless Week 17. Cowherd missed on all five games. Bah humbug.

Hey, the time between Christmas and New Years is a confusing, muddled space. Maybe Cowherd knew even if he missed on all the games he would still finish the season one game above .500.

A week after calling Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz the “closest thing to Patrick Mahomes,” Cowherd continued to heap on the praise:

He obviously doesn’t think Wentz is worth betting his money on though. It’s the second straight week he’s bet against the Eagles…and has lost.

However, Cowherd did bring back his Marquee 3 since its moniker is made for the College Football Playoff, or at least one game was. Cowherd picked Clemson (-2) correctly but badly whiffed on Oklahoma (+14)

Every week we track Cowherd’s picks so you know how he is faring before you follow his bets at FOX Bet or on your PA sports betting apps.

Cowherd’s college football bowl week picks

#3 Clemson (-2) vs. #2 Ohio State

Colin’s pick: Clemson

Colin’s final score: Clemson 36, Ohio State 30

Cowherd said: “I like Clemson to win by a touchdown. I think we are undervaluing Clemson. We look at their conference and say they haven’t played anybody and that is a huge benefit. They are healthy. They’ve got a ton of depth. I believe when you don’t know who is going to win you go with the coaching staff in college and I think Clemson has the best coaching staff by a wide margin. Trevor Lawrence, since Week 9, good luck. Ohio State’s defense gets the credit, I could argue Clemson’s is actually better. First in the country in multiple categories. Trevor Lawrence since Week 9 has been unstoppable. I don’t think the ACC is great but who in the Big 10 is amazing outside of Ohio State? Right now Ohio State’s defense is good but in the last four games they are allowing 21 ppg. Clemson, NFL running back, NFL quarterback, NFL offensive line, NFL tight end, NFL receivers.”

Actual final score: Clemson 29, Ohio State 23

Did Colin win?: Yes

#1 LSU  vs. #4 oklahoma (+14)

Colin’s pick: Oklahoma

Colin’s final score: LSU 41, Oklahoma 30

Cowherd said: “Oklahoma is going to hear they are going to get crushed. Do you know the number one seed has never won the College Football Playoff? Oklahoma is hearing how irrelevant they are. Jalen Hurts is the only quarterback with thirty passing touchdowns and fifteen rushing touchdowns. They are going to move the ball. LSU’s defense is good but was gashed by lesser offenses. Oklahoma’s defense was pathetic last year, it was first in the Big 12 this year. We’ve seen Oklahoma in these big games against SEC teams. They gave Georgia trouble, they beat Alabama years ago. Oklahoma is big boy football. I think this game is going to feel very very close. And I do think LSU escapes.”

Actual final score: LSU 63, Oklahoma 28

Did Colin win?: No

#22 USC vs #16 iowa (-2)

Colin’s pick: Iowa

Colin’s final score: Iowa 28, USC 24

Cowherd said: “I think this is a coaching mismatch of otherwise two very even teams. The Trojans have better perimeter players. Iowa’s got better line play including one of my favorite offensive and defensive lineman. USC football, second-most turnovers in the PAC-12 and lots of penalties. That has been a hallmark of Clay Helton football. The last two years, bowl record .500, out of conference about .500. The Big 10 is 6-1 against the PAC-12 in bowl games the last two years. Iowa’s offensive line is much better than USC’s offensive line. The pass rush from Iowa will be a problem for USC’s freshman quarterback.”

Actual final score: Iowa 49, USC 24

Did Colin win?: Yes

Bowl week record:2-1

Season college football overall record: 18-27

Marquee 3 Super Boost record (requires winning all three games): 1-14

Actual final score: Eagles 35, Giants 17

Did Colin win?: No

Blazin’ 5 Week 17 record: 0-5

Blazin’ 5 overall record: 42-41-3

Blazin’ 5 record (requires winning three out of five games): 9-8

Did Colin Cowherd Win? Yes, Despite Whiffing on Wentz

Colin Cowherd posted an impressive 4-1 record in his Blazin’ 5 NFL week 16 picks, but could have gone undefeated if he went with Wentz.

Fueled by a 4-1 Week 16, Colin Cowherd enters the holiday on a high note.

Sports betters who followed his Blazin’ 5 selections are also singing his praises since they double their money on the FOX Bet app when three of his five picks cover.

While his picks were good for the pocketbook, they went against the two PA NFL teams. Cowherd picked the Jets (+3) to cover versus the Steelers, a win as the Jets won outright. His only wrong pick of the week was the Cowboys (-2) against the Eagles.

It’s a bit curious Cowherd picked the Cowboys, though. He talked up Carson Wentz throughout the week calling him the “closest thing to Patrick Mahomes” and, well, let’s call it praising his ability to work with practice squad graduates.

A hotter-than-chestnuts on an open fire 4-1 performance puts Cowherd’s Blazin’ 5 at 9-7 for the season with an overall record of 42-36-3. So, even if he gets all of his picks wrong next week, he ends the regular season above .500.

Colin Cowherd’s Week 16 NFL picks

Baltimore Ravens (-9) vs. Cleveland Browns

Colin’s pick: Baltimore

Colin’s final score: Ravens 33, Browns 20

Cowherd said: “We talk a lot about Baltimore’s offense but their defense has been absolutely sensational since Marcus Peters arrived. They’re getting a pass rush during their ten-game winning streak. They’re first, second or third in virtually everything including quarterback hits per game. Baker Mayfield has looked very gun shy in the last six weeks. He’s tired of getting hit. Cleveland is a team that allows you to run the football. Teams average 135 yards on the ground. The last time they played they didn’t have Marcus Peters. Nick Chubb was unbelievable. Moral of the story, September is not December.”

Actual final score: Ravens 31, Browns 15

Did Colin win?: Yes

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Miami Dolphins (+1)

Colin’s pick: Miami

Colin’s final score: Dolphins 24, Bengals 20

Cowherd said: “Really like Miami here. It’s close to a pick ’em. Miami is at home on holiday weekend. I don’t think Cincinnati is that well-coached. I think Miami is not great but well-coached. After their disastrous start Brian Flores comes in, new team, he’s trying to figure out his personnel. The last seven games they are 3-4. In their last ten they are 7-3 ATS. Since Week 9, Ryan Fitzpatrick has twice as many touchdown passes as interceptions, he’s completing about 63% of his throws. He’s a great transition quarterback. He’s not a franchise guy but he’s a gamer and he went to Harvard. It’s one of the rare times I love what is considered a bad football team.”

Actual final score: Dolphins 38, Bengals 35

Did Colin win?: Yes

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Jets (+3)

Colin’s pick: Jets

Colin’s final score: Jets 26, Steelers 23

Cowherd said: “Everyone sold their stock after Sam Darnold’s ‘ghost’ comments against New England. Even in losses Darnold’s playing very very well. Since Week 9, he has a 62% completion percentage, 12 TDS, 4 picks, 95 passer rating, two rushing touchdowns. That’s with the worst offensive line in football. He’s not the issue. I love the Steelers front seven but Devlin Hodges, in the four games he’s played, he’s got more interceptions than touchdowns. The Jets have shown at home, remember the Dallas game, where they are pretty impressive. I think Pittsburgh’s been exposed as a totally limited offense.”

Actual final score: Jets 16, Steelers 10

Did Colin win?: Yes

Dallas Cowboys (-2) vs. Philadelphia Eagles

Colin’s pick: Cowboys

Colin’s final score: “Dallas by a touchdown”

Cowherd said: “Carson Wentz is having a much better year than everybody says but here’s the thing about Philadelphia, they can’t beat you over the top. The last couple of weeks against average teams, their defense can’t take the ball away. This is what worries me. If you just let Dak do his little comeback patterns and Zeke runs the ball, Dallas can dominate time of possession. The last couple of weeks, Philadelphia defensively has been awful. Dallas is 5-0 this year when they rush for over 172 yards and Zeke has owned the Eagles defensive front. I love Fletcher Cox but he hasn’t had a great year by Fletcher Cox standards. The Cowboys offensive line is healthy. The Dallas staff gets fired if they don’t win. There is unbelievable urgency. I think Dak’s injury forces Dallas to not get cute and run the football.”

Actual final score: Eagles 17, Cowboys 9

Did Colin win?: No

Kansas City Chiefs (-6) vs. Chicago Bears

Colin’s pick: Chiefs

Colin’s final score: Chiefs 30, Bears, 21

Cowherd said: “I’ll easily swallow the points here. What is Chicago playing for? Kansas City has sneakily become the second hottest team in the league after Baltimore. The last four games they are 4-0 and 4-0 ATS. Since their bye week their defense has been really good. Since Week 12, their defense is number one in fewest points allowed and fifth in fewest yards allowed. In the Bears last ten games they are 2-8 ATS. When they do win it’s ugly. They game has to be played a certain way for Chicago to win. I think Andy Reid privately is thinking ‘we got healthy at the right time, we got hot at the right time.’ This is a team that went into New England and won a football game. I don’t think they played flawless football.”

Actual final score: Chiefs 26, Bears 3

Did Colin win?: Yes

Blazin’ 5 Week 16 record: 4-1

Blazin’ 5 overall record: 42-36-3

Blazin’ 5 record (requires winning three out of five games): 9-7

How To Safely And Securely Play On PA Online Casinos

We consulted with an online security expert and got his advice for how to make sure your PA online casino play is secure and protected.

During the summer of 2019, Pennsylvania entered the world of online gambling.

Whether you choose to sidle up to the virtual slots on your laptop or play  blackjack on your mobile device, there are some safety measures you should consider.

To offer insight to better protect yourself when gambling online we tapped Kevin Hyde, an expert in establishing cybersecurity operational and governance policies for the intelligence community and private industry. He is a career field grade officer in the Marine Corps Reserve and served on active duty at the National Security Agency and U.S. Cyber Command.

“Walking cash from table to a cage and a cage to a truck is a secure process. A smart thief isn’t going to get in the middle of that transaction,” says Hyde of brick-and-mortar casinos. “Getting into the middle of a data transaction is much easier.”

Regulated sites only

A key factor in lowering risks is to play only on legal, regulated online gambling sites. There are currently five online casino sites in PA.

  • PlaySugarHouse
  • Parx
  • Hollywood
  • PokerStars Casino
  • Unibet Casino

Unregulated sites, says Hyde, tend to be filled with malicious criminal groups. Be aware of fake sites that ask you to download attachments.

Don’t confuse this with online casino apps for your phone though. All five PA online casino sites have Android apps available for download, but you want to be sure to download it directly from the casino website. When it comes to Apple App Store apps

Unregulated gambling sites are often the source of phishing attacks. Never click on a website through an email from a source you do not recognize.

Should I gamble on public WiFi?

Never gamble on public wifi advises Hyde.

Public wifi is an open signal that anyone can attach to. Then, they  can run programs that allow hackers to:

  • See your internet traffic
  • Watch your internet traffic
  • Possibly intercept and steal your credentials
  • Confiscate your gambling accounts, checking, or credit accounts

“It doesn’t cost a lot to be a hacker. It’s not the nefarious looking dude wearing a hoodie in the corner. They look like everyone else. The threat is much more sophisticated than one person.”

If you are on an open signal, it’s safer using your cell phone’s hotspot. Or, you can purchase and use a VPN.  It still doesn’t completely protect you on a public wifi network but it is a significant improvement in safety.

Pay for an antivirus

Hyde suggests purchasing a good antivirus program for your computer and/or phone. In addition, be sure to keep operating systems updated.

“If you use free software, you don’t know what you are getting.”

Here is a checklist of some things you can do to improve your security when gambling online.

  • Clean out old caches and memories periodically.
  • Use good password structures.
  • Never share your password across multiple accounts
  • Choosing a secure method of payment/withdraw processing.

Use an identify theft monitoring service

Your computer contains a wealth of data that hackers target such as:

  • Social Security numbers
  • Financial information
  • Passwords
  • Account information

Nearly 60 million Americans have been affected by identity theft according to a 2018 survey.

Hyde highly recommends using an identity theft monitoring service if you gamble online. Usually, banks offer some form of free or inexpensive identity theft monitoring protection.

Enable login notifications

Online casinos in Pennsylvania enable you to receive an email notification upon login. It might seem annoying if you are the one logging in. But if someone else is doing it, it is a first sign that something is amiss.

Keep winnings quiet

Don’t post publicly about your winnings. You may gain some unwanted attention.

“Talking about your money or winnings is not a good idea.”

Hyde adds that posting your winnings can create stalkers and unwanted attention from friends and family members looking for money.

Did Colin Cowherd Win? The “Ravens Of Football Pickers” Fell Short

After a winning week, Colin Cowherd was back to a so-so card of football picks after backing the Rams and the Bears in Week 14.

Riding high off his 4-1 Week 14, Colin Cowherd leveled up his ego.

Before he doled out his Blazin 5′ picks for Week 15, he proclaimed himself the “Ravens of football pickers.” Then, he added an extra pick.

Cowherd’s Blazin 5′ record, which requires three picks to cover for PA sports bettors to double their money when they use the FOX Bet app, was 8-6. The Baltimore Ravens are 12-2.

“I’ve never done this. I feel this good about the picks. If I go 0-6 it just taints me for the season. But I’m the Ravens of football pickers. I’m going all in! I am seeing what everyone else is not.”

Cowherd gives his Blazin 5′ picks on Friday but on Sunday he sent this tweet which omitted a pick, the Rams (-1).

His extra pick didn’t matter. Cowherd finished Week 15 with a 2-3-1 record and needed a Bills cover to avoid a pitiful one-win performance.

Colin Cowherd’s Week 15 NFL picks

Seattle Seahawks (-6) vs. carolina panthers

Colin’s pick: Seahawks

Colin’s final score: Seahawks 28, Panthers 20

Cowherd said: “Ron Rivera’s firing did not go over well in the locker room. Don’t worry about the road. Russell Wilson has been a better road quarterback than a home quarterback. He’s completing 70% of his throws, 103 passer rating. Here’s the thing that will scare you if you’re a Carolina fan, Seattle’s defense has 29 takeaways, third-best in the NFL. Carolina gives it away almost more than anyone else. Turnovers will be a factor.”

Actual final score: Seahawks 30, Panthers 24

Did Colin win?: It was a push

Chicago Bears (+4.5) vs. Green Bay Packers

Colin’s pick: Bears

Colin’s final score: Packers 23, Bears 20

Cowherd said: “Green Bay’s been outgained this year. They get outgained by, like, thirty yards a game. Mitch Trubisky has got limitations but since Week 10, Matt Nagy and the staff have figured out what works and what doesn’t. The Bear’s defense, the last couple of years against Green Bay, has only given up 17 ppg against Aaron Rodgers. I like the coach for the Bears, the defense for the Bears. I’m going to take Green Bay at Lambeau to win on a late field goal, but 4.5. bet the number here, it’s too much to give Chicago.”

Actual final score: Packers 21, Bears 13

Did Colin win?: No

Houston Texans (+3.5) vs. Tennessee Titans

Colin’s pick: Texans

Colin’s final score: Texans 27, Titans 26

Cowherd said: “I have a rule, one team every week is humiliated. As long as that team has a good quarterback, take them the following week because most fans bail on them. The Texans are fun. Are the inconsistent? Oh, God yes. Are they bad? Oh, no. Following a loss this year they are 4-0 and average 28 ppg. The Texans offense is still ninth ranked in the NFL. They are all over the map but this is a must win for them. I like Tennessee. We’re going nuts on Ryan Tannehill.”

Actual final score: Texans 24, Titans 23

Did Colin win?: Yes

Jacksonville Jaguars vs. Oakland Raiders (-6.5)

Colin’s pick: Raiders

Colin’s final score: Raiders 33, Jaguars 23

Cowherd said: “I think the Jags have quit on their coach. The minute they traded Jalen Ramsey, it did not play well in the locker room. Not only is Jacksonville losing, they are losing against the spread. They aren’t tackling well. On the road, they are atrocious. This is the last game for the Raiders in Oakland. This is a team that’s going to celebrate. This is a very big game, a celebration of Oakland and the Raiders. Oakland is going to come out with their hair on fire and play a great game.”

Actual final score: Jaguars 20, Raiders 16

Did Colin win?: No

los Angeles Rams (-1) vs. Dallas Cowboys

Colin’s pick: Rams

Colin’s final score: Rams 28, Cowboys 23

Cowherd said: “I like the Rams for basically one reason. When veteran defensive coordinators face young noobies, it’s been a mismatch. The best teams aren’t always beating Dallas. The most veteran defensive coordinators have owned Kellen Moore. The Rams are a very good road team, 5-1. The Cowboys lost four of five. The offense for the Rams has turned it around. Since Jalen Ramsey arrived in Week 7, the Rams lead the NFL in sacks and are third in total yards.”

Actual final score: Cowboys 44, Rams 21

Did Colin win?: No

Buffalo Bills (+2) vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Colin’s pick: Bills

Colin’s final score: Bills 24, Steelers 13

Cowherd said: “These teams are very similar, excellent coaching staffs, most of the talent on defense. But I get a significantly better quarterback in Buffalo and I get points. This game means a lot for both. This “Duck” guy for Pittsburgh is an adorable story. He won the Alabama state duck calling contest. But Pittsburgh’s offense since Week 10 is atrocious. Buffalo’s defense has held their opponents to 21 points or less in 11 of 13 games, that includes the Patriots and the Ravens. This defense is exceptional for Buffalo. The offense for Pittsburgh is a mess.”

Actual final score: Bills 17, Steelers 10

Did Colin win?: Yes

Blazin’ 5 Week 15 record: 2-3-1

Blazin’ 5 overall record: 38-35-3

Blazin’ 5 record (requires winning three out of five games): 8-7

Did Colin Cowherd Win? The Fire is Blazin’ Again After Week 14

After a late-season slump, Colin Cowherd is back in the winner’s column with his NFL Blazin’ picks for FOX Bet Sportsbook going 4-1.

The fireside might not be the only thing blazing bright this Christmas. After leaving PA sports bettors out in the cold without an odds boost for six of the past eight weeks, Cowherd had a hot Week 14. His Blazin 5′ picks were 4-1.

Three of his Blazin’ 5 picks need to cover for Pennsylvania sports bettors using FOX Bet Sportsbook to double their money with FOX Bet’s odds boost.

Cowherd would have had a winning week but he got “crazy.” He picked the Cardinals +2.5 who lost 23-17 to the Steelers. It was the second week in a row he got burned by the Cardinals.

It seems like Cowherd’s Marquee 3 went on a break over Thanksgiving. It returned for conference championship week for what should be considered a Christmas miracle. Cowherd broke an 0-for-the-season slump when all three of his picks covered.

Every week we track Cowherd’s picks so you know how he is faring before you follow his bets at FOX Bet or on your PA sports betting apps.

Cowherd’s college football Conference Championship Week picks

#5 Utah vs. #13 Oregon (+6.5)

Colin’s pick: Oregon

Colin’s final score: Utah 24, Oregon 23

Cowherd said: “I think Oregon’s defense is better than everybody thinks. Oregon leads the PAC-12 in sacks and interceptions. This is not a defense that just lays down. It’s a really good defense. Justin Herbert has faced this Utah personnel twice and he’s been very good against them, six touchdowns no picks. Oregon’s offensive line is the strength of the team. They got three NFL players. Their offensive line has 213 career starts, the most in the nation. Utah’s defense is loaded but they’ve only faced one ranked team this year. Oregon is going to score some points. I think it’s low scoring and very close. ”

Actual final score: Oregon 37, Utah 15

Did Colin win?: Yes

#2 LSU (-7) vs. #4 Georgia

Colin’s pick: LSU

Colin’s final score: LSU 36, Georgia 27

Cowherd said: “I like LSU and I like them big. Georgia’s top two receivers won’t be healthy. This receiving corps, not a lot of over-the-top components. Jake Fromm has struggled. The last four games he’s completing about 50% of his throws. Their best running back, D’Andre Swift is hurt. I think this is a banged-up Georgia offense that has had issues all year being a big-play offense. Joe Burrow is on fire. He’s number one in the nation in virtually everything. He’s got a great o-line, a stud running back. LSU has won 13 straight and they are 4-0 against top ten teams this year. LSU is not only good and not only hot but they’ve been very good and tested multiple times. I think their offense if frightening. They remind me a lot of Clemson. .”

Actual final score: LSU 37, Georgia 10

Did Colin win?: Yes

#1 Ohio State vs #8 Wisconsin(+16)

Colin’s pick: Wisconsin

Colin’s final score: Ohio State 33, Wisconsin 20

Cowherd said: “Ohio State is better but I’m going to take the 16 points. The last two times a team lost by thirty-plus and it was a rematch in the same the season, the team that lost the first game won the rematch. Wisconsin got blown out and lost by 31. Wisconsin is a real team. They beat Michigan. The Buckeyes defense is good. The first nine games, it was incredible. The last three games they’ve given up 22 a game, only two sacks. Wisconsin is on a four-game winning streak and their offense has been rolling the past few games. Ohio State is the better team, they are off the Michigan game and may be looking ahead. Wisconsin is just too well-coached. They have the best interior offensive lineman and the best running back in the country. They keep it close for a while. I think it feels very close late in the third quarter.

Actual final score: Ohio State 32, Wisconsin 21

Did Colin win?: Yes

Conference championship week record:3-0

Season college football overall record: 16-26

Marquee 3 Super Boost record (requires winning all three games): 1-13

Colin Cowherd’s Week 14 NFL picks

“I’m at 51.5 %. I love four of my picks this week,” said Cowherd on The Herd before giving out his Blazin’5 picks.

Baltimore Ravens(-6) vs. Buffalo Bills

Colin’s pick: Ravens

Colin’s final score:  Ravens 30, Bills 20

Cowherd said: “Like Baltimore, I love them -6. I don’t care that it’s in Buffalo. Lamar Jackson has 14 touchdowns and three picks on the road. He’s a great road quarterback. Baltimore is a great early team. 151-79 edge in the first half. What does that mean? Josh Allen is going to be playing from behind. He’s still young. Buffalo is coming off their biggest win of the decade against the Cowboys. Baltimore won last week but did not think it played particularly well. They are still fighting for the number one seed.”

Actual final score: Ravens 24 , Bills 17

Did Colin win?:  Yes

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Cleveland Browns (-7.5)

Colin’s pick: Browns

Colin’s final score: Browns 32, Bengals 23

Cowherd said: “This number is fluctuating. It’s a good number, though, if you are a bettor. Freddie Kitchens gets exposed when he plays a Pete Carroll, Sean McVay, Mike Tomlin…but this week he faces Zac Taylor and there is no big coaching advantage. But there is a huge personnel advantage. Cleveland’s got a very good defensive front with or without Myles Garrett. The Bengals have a bad offensive line. The Browns defense is top five or six in many categories. Freddie Kitchens and the staff are coaching for their lives. Cincinnati’s staff is intact. Baker Mayfield’s played them well before.”

Actual final score: Browns 27, Bengals 19

Did Colin win?: Yes

Denver broncos (+8.5) vs. Houston Texans

Colin’s pick: Broncos

Colin’s final score: Texans 27, Broncos 23

Cowherd said: “I love this pick. The Texans come off one of their biggest wins in a decade beating the Patriots on television, ‘oh my God, the Texans are amazing.’ No, they are not. They are an average team who has a ridiculous wide receiving corps and a brilliant young quarterback who makes plays. They look like flag football half the time but do you trust them? I trust the defense in the game, Vic Fangio and Denver. After a lousy start, they are 4-4 and a tough out. Fangio could be coaching for his job here. Denver’s defense is ranked number one in the red zone, number five pass defense, they force you into field goals instead of touchdowns. Drew Lock’s opening start was pretty good.”

Actual final score: Broncos 38, Texans 24

Did Colin win?: Yes

Kansas City Chiefs vs. New England Patriots (-3.5)

Colin’s pick: Chiefs

Colin’s final score: Chiefs 28, Patriots 23

Cowherd said: “Rearview mirror people love New England. I’m going to take Andy Reid, Kansas City, and the points. If you look at Andy Reid and Kansas City against New England in the regular season they have been money. The Chiefs are 4-1 on the road this year. New England is a limited offense that cannot win a shootout. They have to win they won against a Dallas. If they don’t play low scoring games like they did against Philadelphia and Dallas they can’t win right now. As Lamar Jackson is exciting us, and Jimmy Garoppolo is so handsome, blah, blah, blah…has anyone looked at Patrick Mahomes stats? They are pretty good. He’s got a 108 passer rating, 65% completions, 20 touchdowns, and two interceptions. This is not a pop-gun offense. This is not going to be 17-10. Kansas City is going to win this game.”

Actual final score: Chiefs 23, Patriots 16

Did Colin win?: Yes

Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Arizona Cardinals (+2.5)

Colin’s pick: Cardinals

Colin’s final score: Cardinals 24, Steelers 20

Cowherd said: “You’re going to think I’m nuts on this, I’m going Arizona +2.5. I’m always concerned about teams who are involved in huge emotional games. Pittsburgh was in a wildly emotional game with Cleveland last week and will pull back. Mike Tomlin is a road favorite out west. I’ve seen that before and don’t love him. Since Week 8, Pittsburgh can’t score. They are 24, 25, 26 in every stat that matters offensively. They are on their third quarterback. Since Week 8 they are averaging 18 points a game. Kyler Murray, throw out the Rams game, he’s given you 65% completion percentage, 95 passer rating as a rookie. He’s a very good quarterback who had an outlier awful game. Pittsburgh’s just a one side of the ball football team.

Actual final score: Steelers 23, Cardinals 17

Blazin’ 5 Week 14 record: 4-1

Blazin’ 5 overall record: 36-32-2

Blazin’ 5 record (requires winning three out of five games): 8-6

What Are Those Weird Gambling Machines In Your Local Bar? What You Need To Know About Skill Games

You’ve seen them at the corner store and probably wonder if those Pennsylvania Skill games are legal. The answer’s more complicated than you think.

They are at the convenience store. And, in the corner at the loved-by-locals breakfast spot. At the bowling alley. They are in 21-to-enter dives and bars with family-friendly menus. At each of these places, there are Pennsylvania Skill machines. The games can be played by 18-year-olds, whereas slot machines on casino gaming floors are strictly 21 years or older.

Pace-O-Matic (POM) designs Pennsylvania Skill games, which are distributed by Williamsport, PA,-based-Miele Manufacturing.

It offers several games including:

  • A tic-tac-toe-style puzzle
  • A potentially unlockable bonus session
  • A “follow me” colored dot-matching second phase of gameplay.

If a player successfully plays the Pace-O-Matic game, he or she wins a total of 105% of the original amount spent to play.

Pennsylvania Skill games

Pennsylvania Skill’s homepage touts the legality.

The “legal updates” page on the site has monthly updates from Matt Haverstick of the Philadelphia-based law firm Kleinbard.

An October 2019 update says:

“We are taking additional measures to end harassment by the Pennsylvania State Police, Lottery and Liquor Control Board of Pennsylvania Skill Operators. If any law enforcement of regulatory agency takes action against you, or otherwise tries to tell you that a Pennsylvania Skill device is illegal, please let the Pennsylvania Skill Compliance Team know immediately.”

Skill games legislation draws doubters

In late October, the House Gaming Oversight Committee heard testimony on Rep. Dan Moul’s House bill, which seeks to legalize, regulate, and tax the games.

The PA Lottery and the PA Gaming Control Board (PGCB) expressed serious reservations about Moul’s current version of the bill. Gaming Committee Chairman Jim Marshall, a Republican from Beaver County, said the hearing would hopefully start a dialogue.

PGCB Executive Director Kevin O’Toole testified overseeing skills games is not among the duties of the gaming board as the law is now written. He also said the proposed legislation does not provide a stream of new revenue to fund investigations and licensing in a new area of responsibility. O’Toole also noted the difficulty in assessing the fairness of a skill-based game.

The PA State Police Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement’s leader, Major Scott Miller, said skills games are seen as illegal gambling within his organization.

He called the current unregulated play “ripe for corruption” because the machines generate millions with no public accounting and no public benefit for the machines in bars. Each machine can generate $500 per week. Miller said he is also concerned about under the table side-deals and loansharking.

Going back in time with skill machines

A 2014 Beaver County case ruled Pennsylvania Skill games legal in 2014. In November 2013, agents of the Pennsylvania Bureau of Liquor Control Enforcement seized a Pace-O-Matic video game device from an Italian-American club in Beaver County. However, the device was returned after a court ruling deemed “the evidence fails to demonstrate that the machine is a gambling device.”

A 2015 House Gaming Oversight Committee Public Hearing addressing the seizure of illegal gambling devices cited two forfeiture cases, including the Beaver County case. At the hearing, Rep. Kill Kortz (D- Allegheny) noted six years ago that the PSP commissioner testified there were 40 to 60,000 machines. This represents a vast difference from the 15,000 machines Butler estimated in his testimony. However, Butler did say it was “very difficult” to come up with the estimate and it “could certainly be more.”

At a June 2019 House Gaming Oversight hearing, lawmakers heard various sides of the debate if skill games threaten the Pennsylvania Lottery and Pennsylvania casinos.

POM Vice President of Government Affairs/Public Relations and Counsel Tom Marino said the company is eager to work on sensible legislation and touted the investments POM made in the community and producing the machines in PA. According to Penn Live, Miele Manufacturing pays taxes on the machines it sells and tries to self-regulate through contracts with its host establishments that require, for example, removal of any illegal machines before the POM games can be placed.

The state taxes casino-based slots at a rate of 54%.

Marino said to Penn Live:

“Our machines are not fixed to win for the House, like the casinos… So a 54% tax would practically wipe out the industry.”

PA Skill games and the PA Lottery

In June 2019, Sen. Tommy Tomlinson (R-Bucks County) introduced Senate Bill 710 to address the “illegal machines” and protect funding for senior programs. Tomlinson, Pennsylvania Lottery officials, Pennsylvania State Police, and senior groups partnered to announce the legislation to combat “illegal Pennsylvania Skill games.”

They said it cost the Pennsylvania Lottery an estimated $138 million in taxes over the past year and put funding for senior programs at risk. The PA Lottery estimates that for every games-of-skill machine placed in a lottery retailer, the PA Lottery loses approximately $2,284 per machine per month.

Pennsylvania Lottery Executive Director Drew Svitko said:

“These illegal machines are creating a huge risk for the older Pennsylvanians who rely upon the programs the Lottery funds. The Games of Skill machines are appearing across the state and we are deeply concerned the harm will only increase. Senator Tomlinson’s legislation will crackdown on the machines and preserve hundreds of millions of dollars that help seniors afford prescriptions, transportation, meals and more.”

The 2017-18 fiscal year was a record-breaker for the Pennsylvania Lottery. They sold more than $4.2 billion in games and paid more than $2.7 billion in prizes to winners generating more than $1 billion to benefit older Pennsylvanians. Two new products, keno and iLottery, contributed to the success.

The most recent ruling on games of skill

On Nov. 20, the  Pennsylvania Commonwealth Court confirmed in a ruling that video game machines manufactured and distributed by the POM under the name “Pennsylvania Skill” are considered slot machines under Pennsylvania law. However, Judge Patricia McCullough did not state that POM was in violation of the Gaming Act.

Haverstick replied to PlayPennsylvania‘s request for comment. He said POM expects to have a trial where they demonstrate they are predominately skill.

POM knows the market they can operate within. Haverstick commented:

“There are a lot of competitors and there is a gray market and bad actors.  POM isn’t one of them. They take care of all the legal fees for every one of their business partners down to the location level. If you are a POM customer, we are out there fighting for you. We have a legal machine and at least one court has upheld we are a legal machine. We expect soon we’re going get a bigger broader ruling that we are a legal machine.”

Did Colin Cowherd Win? He Didn’t Even Bother With College Football This Week

Things are getting so dire for Colin Cowherd’s picks these days he stopped doing his Marquee 3 and only notched one NFL betting win in Week 13.

What makes a winning week of picks?

For Colin Cowherd’s Blazin’5 to give sports bettors in Pennsylvania using the FOX Bet Sportsbook  an odds boost, three of his five picks need to cover.

It seems Cowherd isn’t quite so certain. Two weeks ago he considered a push a win (it isn’t). Then, before announcing his Week 13 picks he said that he’s had nine winning weeks out of 12.

Actually, Cowherd’s had seven winning weeks, not nine.

Where does his fuzzy math come from? Our guess is he’s tacking on these weeks as w’s:

Week 10: 2-3

Week 11: 2-2-1

Perhaps he thinks if more than one of his picks covered the spread he actually “won” which are not the rules of Blazin’ 5.

Cowherd will have a hard time calling his Week 14 picks winners. He went 1-4.

After a hot start to the season, Blazin 5 has fizzled. Cowherd’s only produced a three-win effort two times during the past eight weeks.

Cowherd did not even make his college football Marquee 3 picks this week. There does not appear to be an explanation of why. Maybe due to the holiday? Or he finally put a merciful end to his 0-13 season. If he did decide to drop out, he finishes with an overall record of 13-26

Every week we track Cowherd’s picks so you know how he is faring before you follow his bets at FOX Bet or on your PA sports betting apps.

Colin Cowherd’s Week 13 NFL picks

“I tend to like underdogs. Give me a quarterback, Kyler Murray and points, Derek Carr and points and I like that,” said Cowherd who picked three underdogs.

Both Murray’s Cardinals and Carr’s Raiders lost.

San Francisco 49ers vs. Baltimore Ravens(-5.5)

Colin’s pick: Baltimore

Colin’s final score:  Ravens  31, 49ers 24

Cowherd said: “In their last three games against good teams, Lamar Jackson…the league is playing catch-up to this team offensively. The league didn’t have an offseason to figure him out. They are 5-0 ATS. Forget winning, they are blowing good teams out. San Francisco, as good as they are have struggled against mobile quarterbacks. Against the run, the Niners since Week 8 are 27th. I think this could get ugly. I think San Francisco will keep it close but the score will be deceiving. I think Baltimore controls most of this game.”

Actual final score: Ravens  20, 49ers 17

Did Colin win?:  No

Washington Redskins vs. Carolina Panthers (-9.5)

Colin’s pick: Panthers

Colin’s final score: Panthers 33, Redskins 20

Cowherd said: “I hate laying big numbers but I’m going to take Carolina. Veteran head coach, a lot of good players and they still have an outside shot at a Wild Card. Washington is playing for nothing. This is the worst offense I think I’ve seen in five years. They won last week and Dwayne Haskins completed 44% of his throws. They are a mess offensively. They allow a ton of sacks and the Panthers are second in the league in sacks. Washington is in big trouble.”

Actual final score: Redskins 29, Panthers 21

Did Colin win?: No

Philadelphia Eagles vs. Miami Dolphins (+9.5)

Colin’s pick: Dolphins

Colin’s final score: Eagles 27, Dolphins 23

Cowherd said: “I really like the Miami story. They are doing the best job tanking you can do. They play very hard. Even against Cleveland last week they got down early and played their butts off. I’m going to take them +9.5 against a traveling Philadelphia team. They can’t win at home so they aren’t going to win on the road convincingly. Philadelphia is a broken team decimated by injuries. Since Week 7 they are near the bottom of everything offensively. They are giving the ball away. They are not only struggling, they are sloppy. The penalties, twenty giveaways this year. ATS Miami is 5-2. They are back home, healthy and got a ton of fight. ”

Actual final score: Dolphins 37, Eagles 31

Did Colin win?: Yes

Los Angeles rams vs. Arizona Cardinals (+3)

Colin’s pick: Cardinals

Colin’s final score: Cardinals 27, Rams 26

Cowherd said: “Arizona off a bye at home getting points. I think they are going to win. Arizona had fairly low expectations this year. Rookie quarterback and rookie head coach. Their locker room is very positive right now. Arizona is exceeding expectations. The Rams thought Super Bowl but as of Monday night, they are done with that. That locker room is not good. After starting 3-0 the Rams are a 3-5 football team. Kyler Murray is getting better every single week. Since Week 5, he has ten touchdowns, one pick, and 100 passer rating. Their offensive line, which I hated coming into the season is actually significantly better than the Rams offensive line which I liked coming into the season”

Actual final score: Rams 34, Cardinals 7

Did Colin win?: No

Oakland Raiders (+9.5) vs. Kansas City Chiefs

Colin’s pick: Raiders

Colin’s final score: Chiefs 30, Raiders 27

Cowherd said: “You know one of my rules, good teams with good players playing for something after they get destroyed…it’s my bounce-back theory. Oakland still has a chance to make the playoffs, a very good chance. They were humiliated against the Jets. They are going to button that puppy up and give Kansas City everything they can handle. The Chiefs defense has struggled in the last few weeks and I get one of the better offensive lines. Give Gruden credit, they run the football and their offensive line is better. Kansas City is going to win this game. It’s at home. But I don’t trust that Kansas City defense. I think the Raiders button it up and go back to playing with the spirit and efficiency they have for most of the year.”

Actual final score: Chiefs 40, Raiders 9

Did Colin win?: No

Blazin’ 5 Week 13 record: 1-4

Blazin’ 5 overall record: 32-31-2

Blazin’ 5 record (requires winning three out of five games): 7-6

Embrace The Sports Betting This Thanksgiving Weekend

With a day full of turkey and football, why choose between the two? With online betting live in PA, embrace sports betting this Thanksgiving.

In 2018, Pennsylvania sports bettors celebrated both the launch of retail sports betting and Thanksgiving in the same week.

This year, bettors can enjoy their first Thanksgiving feast where they can bet on their phones.

Whether you’re visiting relatives or hosting a hearty feast in at home, there is bound to be a football on at least one TV this coming Thanksgiving. Here’s the Turkey Day lineup of NFL games:

  • 12:30 p.m.  ET: Chicago Bears vs. Detroit Lions
  • 4:30 p.m. ET: Buffalo Bills vs. Dallas Cowboys
  • 8:30 p.m. ET: New Orleans Saints vs. Atlanta Falcons

With football in action and betting an option, let’s take a look at how to embrace the sports betting when it comes to Thanksgiving this year.

How to have a sports betting-friendly Thanksgiving

After the “how was your drive in, how are the kids, how can I help” small talk, there is the uh-oh emptiness. How can conversation steer clear of topics like politics, religion, and medical ailments?

Since neither the Pittsburgh Steelers or the Philadelphia Eagles are playing this Thanksgiving, it can be a time to share your frustrations with fellow fans of the state’s home teams. The expectations for both the Steelers and Eagles have fallen way short. Uncle Rob isn’t wearing his Roethlisberger jersey this Thanksgiving? Did he place a futures bet on the Steelers?

Family drama getting tense in the adults-only fan cave? Share a bad beat story one of your NFL sports bets this season to ease the tension. With neither of the PA teams in action, make some friendly bets and $5 wagers on your betting apps about Thursday’s games.

A new Thanksgiving tradition

There’s been a shift from “gifts” to “experiences.” Instead of starting the holiday season poring over ads or clicking “add to cart,” share the excitement of watching a game together.

Here’s one way to make sports betting with 21+ family members a part of your Thanksgiving traditions:

Have the bettors start with a bank. Say $50 to place bets during the Thanksgiving games. You have to make a minimum of three bets. It could be player props, over/unders, a spread bet, etc. Whoever ends the day with the most in the bank wins.

Then there are a buffet of possible family-friendly prop bets:

  • Whoever picks the most winners gets to pick first at holiday gift swap/auction.
  • Bottle of wine to the winner.
  • Winner gets first pick in the family fantasy draft the following year.
  • Losers do the dishes.
  • Losers take the kids to see Frozen II

Start Black Friday early with some sports betting app offers

Most every PA sportsbook is serving up multiple promotions around the slate of games. Black Friday may be the day after Thanksgiving, but for bettors, there are plenty of holiday deals to use to their advantage.
