The 2022-23 NHL season began about a week ago (aside from the two games played in Prague at the start of the month). Whether you’re a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins or Philadelphia Flyers, you’ve probably been as eager for the puck to drop as I have been.
As for hockey betting, futures odds for the two in-state teams look enticing, according to Pennsylvania sportsbooks. The Penguins have the tenth-best odds in the league to win the Stanley Cup, while the Flyers’ chances are further down the list.
But the betting lines don’t stop there. Keep reading to see all of the futures lines involving one or both of Pennsylvania’s NHL teams.
Best odds to win the 2023 Stanley Cup
Unsurprisingly, the reigning champions are the favorite to win the Stanley Cup once more. The Colorado Avalanche are +425 on BetMGM Sportsbook PA to repeat and keep the Cup in the Mile High City.
Top 2023 Stanley Cup favorites
The Penguins are tenth on the list, with odds to win their sixth Stanley Cup in franchise history.
Meanwhile, the Flyers are among the long shots in the league at . They are off to an overachieving start, but will have a lot of work to do to make their first Stanley Cup Final since losing to the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.
Stanley Cup betting analysis
Even with captain Gabriel Landeskog injured through the first half of the season, we expect the Avalanche to be firing on all cylinders come playoff time. Despite the lowest odds, they are one of the safest bets out there.
Toronto has the second-most Stanley Cup championships of all time (13), but their last one came in 1967. Even with a star-studded roster led by Auston Matthews, the Maple Leafs only have a few players on their roster to have won a Cup on previous teams. This includes former Kings Kyle Clifford and Jake Muzzin, as well as the recently-signed Nicolas Aube-Kubel, who came from Colorado.
Of the three remaining in the top five, the Florida Panthers are my favorite bet, even despite losing stars Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar. Their roster is still loaded, and Sergei Bobrovsky is still a legitimate goaltender.
Carolina is not as sound at goaltender, and Calgary’s defensive-minded style will have a hard time keeping up with the Eastern Conference’s fast-paced offenses if they do end up representing the West at the end of the season.
Pittsburgh Penguins 2022-23 season outlook
The Penguins are atop the Metropolitan Division going into the final week of October with a record of 4-0-1 (9 points). They’ve averaged 5.2 goals per game to start the season while allowing just 2.2 goals per game, on average.
Captain Sidney Crosby has 10 points, tied for third throughout the entire league. His team-leading seven assists are second in the league, and he’s one of four Pens with three goals on the year. Tristan Jarry is 4-0 between the pipes with a .941 SV%, top five in the NHL.
But the season is young. While the Pens have been perennial playoff contenders going on two decades, they have not won the Metropolitan Division since the 2013-14 season, the first after the division came into existence. They did win the East Division in 2021 when the league shifted its divisions for a COVID-shortened season.
Last year, the Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers each finished ahead of the Penguins in the division. With potent offenses and top goaltending options, both teams have earned over 50% of their possible points to start the season and will be formidable opponents all year long.
Philadelphia Flyers 2022-23 season outlook
There’s nowhere to go but up for the Flyers this year, hopefully. Prospects to start the season had the Flyers anywhere from missing the playoffs, to having the lowest number of points in the league. Make no mistake, the Flyers are in rebuilding mode.
But there’s plenty for fans to like moving forward. The team now has a veteran head coaching presence in John Tortorella, putting rookies such as Noah Cates, Egor Zamula and Tanner Laczynski in good hands for their development.
In the meantime, goaltender Carter Hart is one of the main reasons the team has a winning record to start the season. Hart has shown spurts of brilliance since coming into the league in 2018, but his flashes have always dimmed through the ups and downs of a full season. Even if he puts together a strong year, the Flyers will still be underdogs to make it to the postseason.
For Flyers fans, though, expectations shouldn’t necessarily be the postseason. The season will be a success if the team’s arrow is pointing upward come April with a brighter-looking future for 2024.
2023 NHL conference and division odds
Neither PA team is among the early-season favorites to win the Eastern Conference, but the Penguins (+1000) are still in the top half of the league. The Flyers (+5000) are the second-least likely to win the conference.
2023 Eastern Conference odds
2023 Metropolitan Divison odds
Keep an eye on the New York Rangers for both of these categories. Goaltender Igor Shesterkin gets better with each passing year. Every season, we see a team whose goalie carries them. Combined with their offense, the Rangers could become unbeatable with Shesterkin at his best.
Additional NHL futures at PA sportsbooks
Other fun futures to look at, some of which involve the two NHL teams in Pennsylvania, include:
Stanley Cup champion – winning conference
- Eastern Conference (-125)
- Western Conference (+105)
Stanley Cup champion – winning division
- Atlantic Division (+210)
- Central Division (+240)
- Metropolitan Division (+300)
- Pacific Division (+340)
Stanley Cup champion – nation of winning team
- USA (-350)
- Canada (+275)
Stanley Cup champion – state/province of winning team
- Florida – Panthers or Lightning (+500)
- Alberta – Flames or Oilers (+650)
- Ontario – Senators or Maple Leafs (+700)
- New York – Islanders, Rangers or Sabres (+1000)
- Pennsylvania – Flyers or Penguins (+1600)
- California – Ducks, Kings or Sharks (+2500)
- Any other state/province (-130)
The Stanley Cup winning division prop is an interesting one of the bunch. With +300 odds, the Metropolitan Divison is less likely than the Atlantic and Central. In my opinion, Pittsburgh, Carolina and the New York Rangers all could win, making that a fun season-long sweat.
As for the state/province of the winning team, the two favorites (Florida and Alberta) make the most sense to bet on. Both pairs of teams are Cup contenders, while Ontario, New York, Pennsylvania and Colorado cannot say the same of their states’ teams.
